CHARACTER NUMBER: 1s t
NAME: V'na [ vuh – na ] (virena)
TITLE/RANK: Weyrling Brassrider [ artist ]
AGE: Twenty
GENDER: Male
SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Confused
ALLEGIANCE/FACTION: Pern/Galactic Empire
APPEARANCE:
Considering the way he stands it's actually rather surprising how tall he actually is. Standing at a grand total of six foot two inches in height, he is tall. But he usually shrinks himself. His shoulders hunch up, he slouches slightly, he'll try his very best to lean against a wall instead of standing near someone. Virena does not like to stand taller then anyone in the room, and quite often he does end up doing so. It's because of his posture that he 'has' back problems. In truth it's just his muscles complaining about the treatment every now and then, nothing overly serious for him to have to worry about it for a while.
Bad posture and constant nervousness have given him a build that you could never in a million Turns call robust. He is skinny, with the barest out line of muscles that make sure he doesn't look like a walking corpse. Considering that he eats healthily, and exercises very little, you'd think he'd be larger, but he isn't. No, he's disappointingly thin. All arms and legs, his torso is lost amidst the rest of him.
His face is nice though. Long, yes, with a sort of pointed look to his chin, he's not handsome. Nice, yes; charming, yes. But not handsome. His lips are a little bit too red, his nose is a little wide, sometimes his cheek bones look a little high, and his brow is a little bit, well...Overhanging his eyes. They are pretty eyes. Green and veined with darker and lighter shades, though the whole look is of a dark shade of green. They sit nicely on his face, without standing out too much. Beside,s his nest of hair sort of covers them up slightly. Haircuts aren't his favourite thing in the world, and he often does them himself. His hair is jaggedly cut around his head, never reaching further then the bottom of his ears. It's his fringe that always annoys him the most, yet he can never get it out of the way without getting rid of it. It hangs and jumps around in front of his face, or so it seems to him.
PERSONALITY:
He's a pessimist. On purpose. He grew up with the wrong name, and a series of older brothers who tormented him for it, he's learnt to expect the worst – even if that doesn't actually happen. He can see himself falling down the stairs and breaking his neck, he can see himself making a fool of himself in front of the Weyrleaders, he can even see himself finishing a commission and ending up putting his fist through it. He just doesn't look on the bright side of things. Never has, never will, either – or at least he doesn't think he will. No matter how much good happens, he will never see the good side of it. He won't even see the good side of a good thing. Even if it hits him in the face at fifty miles an hour
But this leaves him skittish, shy, and terrible anti-social. He's just worried he'll make a fool of himself. But his tenancy to run away from his problems and social situations makes him unpopular. If he can't run away he simply shuts up, or stutters out a reply. There's very few people he won't stutter at when he speaks, and even those few people he still feels the urge to run away from. He is one of the hardest people to ever become friends with. If you can become friends with him though then he's not entirely that bad to talk to. He likes to share his ideas, his visions of the future, his opinion. Give him someone to trust and he can rant for hours. Politics he doesn't enjoy so much, though he's willing to complain about a lot of them. It's just getting him into a conversation that's the problem.
His skittish behaviour shows itself in another way as well – he's afraid of technology. Oh, mundane things like electric heating and plumbing, steam powered machines, clockwork, they're all alright. It's when you get to the big things like space ships...He gets incredibly nervous. Keep him stuck inside one of the things for too long and he'll most likely suffer from panic attacks. Which leaves him a little screwed over considering most of his clients come over in space ships...He's trying to deal with things, only it's going badly. Most of the time he simply shuts himself away and draws if he absolutely has to be on one. If he doesn't, then it's unlikely he'll stay on it for any longer then a few minutes.
HISTORY:
Mother: Yilera, Holder
Father: Ventra, Smith
Brothers: Smuel, Smith (29)
Ilsac, Farmer (28)
Karj, Trader (25)
Gnar, Smith (23)
Sisters: Ulleniaa, Wherhandler, Green Ulleniask (18)
He had what could be called a busy childhood.
When Yilera was once again pregnant with her fifth child she wanted a girl. She went to every trader that offered to tell fortunes, every Holder lady that claimed to have a herbal drink that would make sure the child was a girl. Everything she could do, she did. Everything except give birth to a baby girl. Virena was named out of his mother's want for a girl, named even before he'd been born, and she refused to name him anything else. It wasn't so bad when he was younger, since his brothers were either young enough to not care, but old enough to know he wouldn't understand anyway, but as he reached his teens and they began to grow out of them nearly, they did tease him.
His house had always been a rough and tumble sort of place. His brothers were large, muscled from working with their father, unusually gruff, and commanding. Virena took after his mother more then he did his father. Because of that he wasn't included in his brother's games of rough and tumble, or his father's work. He stayed with his mother, picked up the charcoal she almost knocked out of the fire when she cleaned it, and drew on things. Or sewed. But that was a skill he didn't like to focus on for anything other then fixing a tear in his clothes. No, drawing he found entertaining, he enjoyed it.
When he was young he sketched everything from the felines that hung around the Hold, to flowers; from pies, to trees. Whatever he could see at the time. Eventually he progressed onto a pencil and drawing paper, but his brothers had started teasing him about his name by then, and he tried not to draw so much. It was bad enough that he looked like a girl, never mind doing thins a girl did. His little sister was the one who encouraged him to draw, and it was only because of her that he continued it at all. There were many times he nearly gave up.
Ulleniaa was just as rough as her eldest brothers, and she played dirtier then them. She was the one who bit and kicked when the adult's backs were turned, not them. It was no surprise that she left them all at the age of twelve to try and run away. She was dragged back, of course very unhappy about not being allowed to go on an adventure. When Virena was fourteen, and asked to become an artist's apprentice (not like a craft apprentice, not an honest craft, his father had sneered) she was the one who told him to do it, and then went on to try and be able to stand for a dragon.
They were the family misfits. His apprenticeship continued, he moved away with his Master, leaving them all behind. Ulleniaa wrote to him, but that was the only contact he ever had with his family. She told him everything from who his brothers had married, to what craft they were doing now. Se was the first person that she told her dream of being a Wherhandler to. She'd encouraged him, he encouraged her. At seventeen she bonded to Green Ulleniask, while at nineteen Virena managed to become a proper artist. He set up his own business, but it's never turned out to be exactly what he wanted. Too many people want him to lie on the paper, too many people just want portraits, not enough want the important things – important things like scenes, still life, the dragons. Dragons are Pern's lifeline, after all.
